What happens during coaching?
Coaching is not about being given advice or suggestions about your process or the decisions you need to make. Instead, it’s about offering you a reflective and thought-provoking space to creatively come to your own decisions and take ownership of them.
We do this together by looking at what it is in your life that you wish to develop further. This isn’t necessarily always clear initially, so we might need to do some additional work at first to clarify it further. We look at obstacles that are holding you back and explore ways of being able to move forward in that part of your life. We also look at different actions or attitude changes that would move you closer to what you want or need.
Coaching or counselling?
There is a lot of overlap between coaching and counselling. The difference between them lies primarily in three things: your current mental health state, the focus of the work we do together, and some of the tools that we use.
Personal counselling and EMDR therapy primarily focus on mental health difficulties. In order to help with the healing process, it’s often vital to delve into past experiences and behavioural patterns in order to understand yourself better and start changing the current situation so as to feel better. On the other hand, coaching is geared more towards personal development in one’s personal life or at work in a situation where you’re functioning well overall. The focus is more on the present and future, looking at how to develop ways to move forward in your life in the direction that you desire. The tools that we use in counselling and coaching reflect the nature and focus of the work being done.
